NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Trash, human waste, used needles, this is what a man found on Friday along the Cumberland River in west Nashville.

The trash was left behind by people after camping along the riverbank near the Brookemeade Greenway.

A man who watches over the Cumberland River said the trash is not just polluting the river, it’s also making it dangerous for people who want to enjoy the greenway and river.

“This goes to show the mentality that we have, and it’s not just back here, it’s up on the main roads, it’s downtown Nashville,” said Vic Scoggins with Save the Cumberland. “It affects the beauty of the state. That’s why people are moving here. When the rivers come up it goes to the ocean, and it kills turtles, it kills fish and it’s killing us.”

Scoggins and Save the Cumberland work hard to keep the area clean and safe, but they can’t do it without your help.

They ask everyone to be more mindful of where they’re throwing out their trash.
