Police looking for man who approached girl at Mount Juliet bus stop

Posted: Updated:

Police in Mount Juliet are searching for a man who allegedly approached a girl at her school bus stop Friday morning.

The man reportedly asked the 10-year-old to get into his car several times around 6:15 a.m. Friday at the Hickory Station townhomes.

“She said daddy I have an emergency,” said Cody Thuringer, the girl’s father. “She said someone tried to kidnap me and I mean of course I want to be there immediately."

The girl eventually ran away to a nearby friend when she became scared.

“He said get in the car, get in the car,” said Zulay Orozco, her mother. “She said no.”

The man then drove away down West Division Street near North Mount Juliet Road.

According to police, the suspect was driving a dirty, black four-door car with tan seats. The car has non-tinted windows and had old newspapers, magazines, trash and bags in the back seat.

Multiple officers searched the area after learning of the incident but could not find the suspect.

A man who was walking his dog in the area noticed the interaction. He didn’t hear the conversation but called the police.

“Anytime this happens it alerts us and we have to do a complete investigation,” said Mount Juliet Police Capt. Tyler Chandler.

The suspect is described as a black heavyset man with facial hair on his chin and facial scarring. He was wearing a black jacket and a black baseball hat over a black skull cap.

Chandler issued a statement with an earlier press release:

We place the safety of our community’s children at the highest priority, and along our efforts to make the public aware of this suspicious incident, officers will continue to be-on-the-lookout for the suspect. Extra patrols will also be conducted near school bus stop locations in our community. While we do not know the man’s intentions, all indications lead us to believe that the interaction occurred. If this man had no-ill intentions, our hope is that he would contact us so we can put the community at ease.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the Mt. Juliet Police Department at 615-754-2550. Information can also be given anonymously by calling 615-754-TIPS or the Mt. Juliet Police Department website.
