CROSS PLAINS, TN (WSMV) -

With constant traffic, it's strange to hear someone was robbed at gunpoint right on the side of I-65. Three women say that's exactly what happened.

Wednesday night three women reported to sheriff's deputies they were traveling on I-65, moving furniture to a new home in Portland.

Around mile marker 110 near Cross Plains, they said they heard a noise in the back of their truck and pulled over to the side of the interstate to secure their furniture.

The women said two men pulled up behind them offering help, but one quickly pulled out a handgun and told the women to give them everything they had.

One woman said she tried to hide a phone behind her back, but a robber punched her in the face and took it.

The women said money, a phone, jewelry and a debit card were all taken before the robbers sped away.

Two miles down the road, people at Sad Sam's convenience store saw the women pull in, the three of them searching for a phone to call 911.

"Traveling down the interstate and stopping on the side of the road is dangerous, especially at night time," said Lt. Brad Edwards of the Robertson County Sheriff's Department.

Edwards said he's never seen a robbery on the side of busy I-65 before.

He said the women were in a tough situation with loose furniture in a truck with miles before the next exit.

"Try to make your stop on the side of the road as brief as possible and try to get to a well-populated, well-lit area," said Edwards. "We also suggest if you do travel with a load, make sure it’s stowed as best as possible. There's more folks traveling during the day. You're able to see things better. People are able to see you better."

Edwards added deputies are trying to reach the three women again, needing more specific descriptions of the robbers.
