NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A cell phone video taken moments after a serious motorcycle crash on Interstate 40 near downtown Nashville on Monday shows a Metro Police officer pass the scene without stopping.

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of I-40 just before the Fesslers Lane exit on Monday morning.

Eyewitness Robert Gales started recording with his phone while others knelt over crash victim Wendy Sims, who was lying unconscious in the middle of the far right lane.

The video showed one witness calling 911 for help and describing the location on the interstate.

Moments later a Metro Police care is seen driving by the crash scene.

Sims was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and remains in critical condition. Her family told News4 she’s in a medically-induced coma.

Metro Police spokesperson Kris Mumford defended the officer in an email to News4, saying he didn’t see the crash.

“Due to the poor quality of the video/photo, it is impossible to 100 percent identify the driver, however, we think it reasonable that this was a South Precinct officer who, when asked about this incident, reported that after leaving booking on Monday, he was in the area of the Fesslers Lane exit of I-40E but was not aware of the accident. He said had he been, he would not have ignored it. He did not hear the initial call regarding the crash go out and surmises he may have had his radio turned down while conducting business with the commissioner or booking. During his transition from booking to Fesslers Lane he did not see any kind of traffic accident. At this time, the officer was responding to another call on Foster Avenue involving a stolen vehicle. The officer is quoted as saying “any officer on this department that would ignore a call of that nature doesn’t deserve to wear a badge.”
