MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

Murfreesboro Police are looking into an apparent hate crime just yards away from MTSU’s campus.

Stephen Albers said he was knocked to the ground by strangers as he was walking home from a bar last weekend.

Albers is openly gay and he said the man who punched him yelled a homophobic slur.

Albers is a journalist for Out & About Nashville, a monthly gay magazine.

He said he was having drinks and working on a piece at Gentlemen Jim's.

He left and started walking home towards Campus Pub when he was approached by a stranger.

“I was pushed down on the ground and some not so nice choice words were used towards me, some homophobic slurs,” said Albers.

Albers said when he got up he was punched to the ground and then he saw a man and two others take off on motorcycles.

“I developed this pretty dark bruise there on my cheekbone,” said Albers.

While Albers is sore, he says what hurts the most is the intolerance.

“It’s 2018 folks. This isn't acceptable. It's a hate crime,” said Albers.

It won't keep him from walking at night and returning to his favorite bars.

“That lets them win and we can't let them win,” said Albers.

Albers said he does not feel these particular bars are unsafe.

He said both customers and owners have always been accepting of gay patrons.
