NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

James Shaw Jr., better known as the Waffle House hero, was honored on Monday night by his alma mater.

Shaw graduated from Tennessee State University.

The university president said the school is very proud of his “bravery and courage.”

The university held a ceremony and reception on campus in his honor on Monday.

Shaw said he has had a busy week and is ready to disconnect.

“I am going to turn off every device that I have – phone, watch, tablet – I am going to turn it all off and I am just going to get out of town,” Shaw said. “I plan on taking my daughter to Disney World or something. I plan on trying to get it off my mind and move on from the situation.”

One state lawmaker said Shaw’s heroics kept at least 16 people from being killed. Four people died as a result of the shooting at the Waffle House on Murfreesboro Pike in Antioch.

The GoFundMe account “Victims of Waffle House Shooting” that Shaw created has received more than 6,200 donations totaling $227,000 as of Monday. The account will be closed on Sunday, May 13.
