MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

A Mount Juliet police officer broke out a window of a car to pull out a toddler left inside without the car running, according to police.

Police said officers were at the Walgreen’s Pharmacy, 206 Crossings Lane, after a citizen reported a young child left alone in an SUV.

The officer arrived to find a 2-year-old boy, who was buckled into a car seat, screaming, crying and sweating to the point that his hair was soaked.

The mother, Mariam Banoub, 30, of Mount Juliet, was found inside the store with a 4-year-old girl. Information from the scene led officers to believe that the 2-year-old was intentionally left unattended for nearly 25 minutes.

Banoub was charged with leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle, child neglect and resisting arrest. She was booked into the Wilson County Jail.

The children were later released to their father.

Police said the mother took an older child into the store but left a younger one in the car.

"We are so thankful a watchful citizen saw the child and knew to immediately report it," the Mount Juliet Police Department said in a tweet. "Whether the car is running or not, it's a dangerous situation for any young child - especially on a hot day. It is also against the law."

“It blows my mind that people leave their kids in the car,” said Leslie Franke, a mother of two children. “It gets twice as hot in a car as it does outside. The health risks are ridiculous.”
