NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Two people have been arrested in connection with the death of a woman inside her Powers Avenue home in East Nashville.

Police was called to the home on Monday after employees of the Park Center, which manages housing for persons with mental health and addiction issues, discovered Shay L. Jones, 45, dead.

Another resident who lives separately in another section of the house called management after being unable to contact Jones to change a setting on the thermostat, which was located in Jones’ section of the house.

The employees found Jones beside a bed with a cord around her neck affixed to a bedpost. She had died days earlier, and the scene had an initial appearance of a possible suicide. Jones’ car was also missing.

On Monday, police in Birmingham, AL, encountered Kayla Burroughs, 31, of Hermitage, in the victim’s 2002 Honda Accord after a citizen heard her talk about a murder.

During an interview with Metro Police detectives on Monday night, Kayla Burroughs admitted that Jones was murdered.

She said that during the latter part of April, she, her husband Joshua Burroughs, 36, and Jones used drugs together.

Kayla Burroughs told police she and her husband decided to blackmail and/or rob Jones of her jewelry and her vehicle. When Jones resisted, Kayla Burroughs said Joshua Burroughs struck her in the face, tied a cord around her neck and strangled her. He then allegedly attached the cord to the bedpost.

Kayla Burroughs had driven the Accord to Birmingham from George County, MS, where Joshua Burroughs was arrested for DUI while driving the car on April 25.

Joshua Burroughs declined to speak with Metro Police detectives on Friday.

Warrants have been issued charging Joshua and Kayla Burroughs with criminal homicide. They are expected to be returned to Nashville in the coming days.
