(Meredith) – A dog is dead after its owner was forced to store the pup inside the overhead bin of a plane by a flight attendant on a United Airlines flight.

A passenger was flying with her dog from Houston to New York when a United flight attendant told them to stow the dog’s carrier, with the dog inside, in the overhead bin. The story originally caught traction online from a series of tweets by Maggie Gremminger detailing the incident and the emotional fallout.

Other passengers reported hearing the dog barking, but as the flight went on, the barking occurred less and less. After the flight landed, the owner discovered the shocking and horrifying truth that the dog had died in-flight.

After the news broke, United issued a statement confirming the story and apologizing for the incident.

This was a tragic accident that should never have occurred, as pets should never be placed in the overhead bin. We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them. We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again.

United’s website states that pets “must be carried in an approved hard-sided or soft-sided kennel. The kennel must fit completely under the seat in front of the customer and remain there at all times.”

The official cause of the dog’s death has not been confirmed. The Points Guy speculated a lack of air could have been the cause, because even though the overhead bins are pressurized, there is no air circulation in the bins since there is generally no expectation of having a living animal inside them.

United refunded the tickets purchased for the dog owner and her children, including the fee the family paid to bring the pet with them.
