NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

CareNow physicians recommend patients to seek immediate treatment if they exhibit flu-like symptoms.

If the virus is caught within the first 48 hours, doctors have the ability to treat it.

If you’re the type who doesn’t like going to the doctor or prefers to let your illness run its course, don’t do it.

“If we catch it quickly, there are medications we can prescribe to shorten the severity and duration of the flu,” said Dr. Robert Crandfield, a physician for CareNow. “So if you have any questions about whether you have the flu, don’t delay, go in right away and have that test done.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting the flu is reporting so far this year that 37 children have died compared to just eight at this time last year. There is widespread flu activity in 49 of the 50 states, only Hawaii is reporting local activity.

If you have been diagnosed with the flu, you should stay home to minimize the chance to spread it to others.

The Tennessee Department of Health is offering free flu shots through its county health clinics through the remainder of flu season or until they run out of vaccines. The Metro Public Health Department also offers free flu shots while supplies last.
