TN Promise still needs over 200 student mentors across the state

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The deadline to become a Tennessee Promise student mentor is today, and the group says they still need over 230 mentors across the state to fulfill their goal of 9,000. 

The organization partners local volunteers with graduating high school seniors to help ease their transition from high school to college. 

In Middle Tennessee, For every student that signed up for the program to have a mentor, 349 volunteers are still needed across 17 different counties. Nashville's surrounding counties, including Cheatham, Robertson, Rutherford and Sumner Cos., have the largest need for volunteers.

Here's a list of how many mentors are still needed in Middle Tennessee, by county:

  • Bedford Co. -- 9
  • Cheatham Co. -- 25
  • Coffee Co. -- 5
  • DeKalb Co. -- 1
  • Dickson Co. -- 10
  • Giles Co. -- 13
  • Lewis Co. -- 9
  • Lincoln Co -- 8
  • Macon Co. -- 16
  • Robertson Co. -- 14
  • Rutherford Co -- 62
  • Smith Co. -- 15
  • Stewart Co. -- 6
  • Sumner Co. -- 71
  • Wayne Co. -- 2
  • Williamson Co. -- 2

Memphis' home county, Shelby Co., has the largest deficit in the state by far with 488 enrolled students still without mentors. 

In the first two years of the program, almost 120,000 students have applied, according to a news release. Many of the students are first-generation college students.

Students that sign up for TN Promise are also guaranteed admission to one of the state's 13 community colleges or 25 colleges of applied technology tuition-free with a Last-Dollar Scholarship
