KNOXVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

University of Tennessee athletic director John Currie has been placed on leave with pay, the university announced Friday afternoon.

According to multiple reports, Currie attended a short meeting Friday morning at the office of Chancellor Beverly Davenport. The meeting reportedly lasted approximately eight to 10 minutes.

When asked if he had been fired, Currie refused to comment on what happened during the meeting.

The university announced that former head football coach Phillip Fulmer will serve as acting athletic director.

Davenport will be holding a news conference in Knoxville at 3 p.m. CT. News 4 will stream the press conference live.

Currie had been under fire after multiple attempts to hire a new head coach failed.

The Associated Press is reporting that Washington State football coach Mike Leach met with Currie on Thursday in Los Angeles.

Former head coach Butch Jones was fired in November.

Currie was hired from Kansas State University in March.

Davenport joined the university in February after serving as the interim president at the University of Cincinnati.
