One suspect is in custody after a burglary at a Cheatham County store Tuesday night.

The owner of Finch's Country Store said he just happened to be there checking on his business when he saw one of the suspects leaving his store carrying cigarettes around 10:15 p.m.

The two suspects busted through a glass door to get inside the store off U.S. Highway 70.

According to police, the store owner pulled out a gun and warned the suspect to stop.

He followed the suspect as he ran across the street to a green minivan, telling him police were on the way.

The store owner then got in the van with the suspects, trying to get them to stop. They took off with him still in the van, and the store owner fired at the suspect in the back seat. The store owner was eventually knocked out of the van.

"After he fired, he had to let go to fire his gun to get them to stop, and at that time, the vehicle was in motion," said Lt. Shannon Heflin.

The suspect was shot in the abdomen. He was later found unconscious inside the same van that served as his getaway vehicle on 12th Avenue in Nashville.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he will undergo surgery.

According to police, the store owner has minor injuries, including road rash on his face, legs and arms.

This is the second time the store has been robbed this month. The first robbery happened just last week.

"So, I can tell that he's frustrated and probably trying to take the law into his own hands," Heflin said. "You can't really blame him for that, but it is a dangerous situation, and we'd like to tell store owners and business people - don't put your lives over property."

The sheriff's office is holding a news conference about the incident at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
