NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Mayor Megan Barry’s proposed mass transit plan has been expanded to include two popular neighborhoods.

Barry announced Wednesday she is extending the proposed Charlotte Avenue light rail by two miles.

It was initially set to end at Interstate 40 and White Bridge Pike, but the new plan will extend the route into The Nations and Sylvan Park neighborhoods.

“We knew at the time it really was stopping short of that opportunity to connect one of Nashville’s busiest and most congested intersections,” Barry said. “We realized that we have more revenue than initially planned for, and that revenue is what we can use to invest in building out phase one of Nashville’s modern transit network.”

The extension will add $240 million to the mass transit plan, pushing the total to $5.4 billion.

The community group Transit for Nashville says it’s a good move giving the Charlotte corridor some “equilibrium” in comparison to other light rail routes.
