NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Thousands will be taking to the skies in Nashville as they make their way to and from their Thanksgiving destinations.

The biggest travel days of the Thanksgiving holiday are on Wednesday and Sunday.

Approximately 21,000 passengers are expected to depart from Nashville International Airport on Wednesday. That's more people than you can fit inside Bridgestone Arena.

On Sunday, over 23,000 people are scheduled to depart from Nashville as they return home.

A spokesperson for AAA says the high numbers are a testament to how many people have relocated to Nashville.

Airport officials say they can't stress enough just how important it is to arrive early.

"Get here early. When you plan Thanksgiving, you think about when to start thawing your turkey. When you travel, you should think about what time you're getting here to make sure it's as stress-free as possible," said BNA corporate communications manager Jared Porter.

Below are more travel tips from the airport:

  • Pack smart by knowing what to pack before you depart. Visit tsa.gov for tips.
  • Check flight status before heading to BNA.
  • Arrive inside the terminal at least two hours before a scheduled flight.
  • Be sure to check your boarding pass before entering the security checkpoint to see if you’ve been selected to participate in TSA PreCheck for that particular flight.
  • Check security checkpoint wait times at flynashville.com and on flight information monitors in the ticket lobby.
  • Mobile boarding passes are accepted at BNA. Passengers can use their smartphones and mobile devices to show their boarding passes and for check-in. For more information, contact your airline carrier.

AAA predicts 51 million Americans will take a Thanksgiving trip this year - the most since 2005.

Including all methods of travel, 1.16 million Tennesseans are contributing to the national total by traveling 50 miles or more.
