NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Nashville is one of less than 10 cities in the country developing a new, cutting-edge facility for people in mental health crisis.

A psychiatric emergency room is expected to be completed next year and will be located within Metro Center.

The manager of the program says someone in a crisis could be having a psychotic episode or contemplating hurting themselves or others.

"When the walls cave in, and you’re in the midst of a crisis, and it’s so painful that even death is on the table, death by suicide, the last thing we want is a slow-moving complicated system of care," said program manager Adam Graham.

Instead of being taken to a medical emergency room or jail, they will be taken to the new facility, which will be designed for calm and comfortable conversation.

As suicide rates grow in Nashville, and more people are experiencing crisis, this space will open up room at traditional emergency rooms.

"The police department and our emergency rooms have admirably stepped up to try to meet this need, but when it comes to resolving psychiatric crises, neither the police or emergency rooms were designed for that purpose," Graham said. "So we want to grow to be a better partner to them so they can get back to the life-saving work that they do."

If you or a loved one are experiencing a mental health crisis, you can call the Mental Health Cooperation's Mobile Crisis Response Team 24/7 at 615-726-0125 or 855-274-7471.

The crisis center is also open 24/7 at  275 Cumberland Bend in Nashville. Adults and children are both served at the facility. Click here for more information.
