JOELTON, TN (WSMV) -

Police say they have arrested the man accused of stealing a car from the garage of a Joelton home, triggering a manhunt overnight.

One of the homeowners fought back against the suspect, who broke into their house on the 5000 block of Highway 41A while their children were sleeping inside.

Homeowner Zack Suggs said his wife went to check on their dog in their garage around 10:45 p.m. Monday, which is when she found the suspect sitting in the car.

She said the suspect jumped into the 2008 Nissan Altima, put it into reverse and drove through the closed garage door.

Suggs grabbed his gun and went outside, firing seven to eight rounds at the suspect as he drove away. He said the most frustrating part about all of this is not his busted garage door, but it's knowing that his two children were sleeping inside.

"What if we had sent our son downstairs to put the dog away? Then this is a lot worse than him just taking my car. That's been the scariest thing for us as parents thinking, what if he had left with our kid?" Suggs said.

Around midnight, a woman in Ridgetop called police after she saw a car go off the road and stall. She then saw the driver jump out of the passenger side window and run into the woods.

Police set up a perimeter in the area around Woodruff Avenue and Lennox Avenue. A Robertson County K-9 officer and a THP helicopter were used in the pursuit. By 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, Ridgetop police said they believed the suspect was no longer in the area.

By Monday afternoon, police were able to track down the suspect, 24-year-old Denver Taylor. He was found passed out, under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Taylor is being held at the Robertson County jail. He will face home invasion, theft and vandalism charges there.

Ridgetop police said Taylor will also face felony theft charges for stealing vehicles there.

Police said Taylor stole a total of four cars from Nashville, Joelton, Ridgetop and Springfield. Some of the cars were hot-wired and others had keys in them.
