NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Police say the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man by his close friends appears to have been unintentional.

The shooter, 20-year-old Dedrick Wade, told detectives he and his friends were inside a home in the 2000 block of South Lyle Lane when he began handling a gun he thought was unloaded. Wade pulled the trigger and the weapon fired, hitting Tyler Payne in the head.

Wade began driving Payne to Southern Hills Medical Center before pulling over in the 3900 block of Nolensville Pike and calling 911.

Payne was pronounced dead in the vehicle.

Police said Wade is cooperating with detectives. The shooting remains under investigation. Wade has not been charged at this time.
