Not just country music, Nashville has thriving opera

Posted: Updated:

We all know Nashville is known for country music, but did you know Music City also has a thriving opera?

"This is arts city, not just Music City," said Stacy Widelitz, Nashville Opera board member and president of Leadership Music.

"We all think of the fat lady with the horn of her head, but it's not that. It's the ultimate theatrical experience. There's music, there's singing, there's acting, there's strong subject matter. It's such a dramatic experience," Widelitz added.

Last year the opera performed in New York to a standing ovation. Widelitz was there.

"It's a fantastic experience that I really encourage everyone to try at least once, and then you'll get hooked,” Widelitz said.

And no worries, he said, if the opera is in foreign language.

"There are super titles over the stage, so you can follow along in English,” he said.

The opera's smaller chamber group performs an opera combined with tango this weekend at the Noah Liff Opera Center in Sylvan Park. All three shows are sold out.
