TSA fails undercover probe nationwide

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Screeners at TSA lines across the country are failing to detect weapons at alarmingly high rates, according to a new undercover operation.

It's still not clear exactly how many weapons were let through security during the probe, but a congressional committee chairman who saw the numbers called it disturbing.

The last time a probe like this was conducted was back in 2015. In that investigation, screeners missed 95 percent of smuggled weapons, fake explosives and other contraband.

It's not clear exactly how Nashville International Airport fared in connection with the study.

According to other studies, BNA stopped the seventh-highest number of firearms from getting past security in 2016.

The most recent weapon was found in a carry-on bag by TSA officials at BNA less than two weeks ago. Several grenades were caught going through security three weeks ago.

TSA is promising to take immediate steps to ramp up security as the holiday season approaches.
