MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

There is nothing scarier for a small child than a fire or other emergency, and first responders know that all too well.

When they arrive on a scene, a little distraction, like a toy, can help calm down an anxious child.

Thanks to the Murfreesboro Exchange Club, the Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue Department has 200 stuffed animals to carry along.

They are brand new Sesame Street characters that will be on board emergency vehicles just in case they are needed.

“It can be a child involved in a fire. It could be an injured child at a playground. It could even be a child whose family has been injured or sickness. It's proven to really comfort a child when they're upset or need some consoling. It also helps us assess a child,” said Assistant Fire Chief Kim Lawson.

Fire officials said the toys can work wonders, and the donation is certainly appreciated.
