MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

For days, family and friends prayed a missing Mt. Juliet father would return home safe.

A body found last week in the Tennessee River has been confirmed to be Scott Ray Damon. Wilson County Sheriff's officials are working alongside the TBI in a homicide investigation.

"He could entertain you and make you the biggest, best omelet you ever ate," Rachel Dixon laughed.

Dixon first met Damon while they worked together at a Waffle House. She was an orientation leader. He was a cook and later a manager.

"We'd be like, 'Scott, we're hungry!'" she remembered. "He'd just make it. We didn't have to tell him what we wanted. In the next few minutes, he'd be saying your name and 'come get your food!' He babysat my kids. My boys loved him. He'd take them out riding bikes and play Xbox. He was just the super-sitter. I have a special needs son, and for that one-on-one, it was amazing."

Dixon said Damon had three boys himself. Both families spent Thanksgiving together last year.

"We called it our misfit Thanksgiving," she said. "He was family. He wasn't a friend. He was family. He was just a kind, free soul. He was just great. You never realize the impact somebody has in your life until they're gone."

Officials with the Wilson County Sheriff's Department said Damon was last seen in the Lebanon area on Oct. 21. Last week, a body was found in the Tennessee River near the Interstate 40 bridge between Benton and Humphreys counties.

"We just prayed it wasn't him, because the last place he was was way far away from where they found him," Dixon said.

The body was confirmed to be Damon.

"He had three kids of his own, and those boys don't know what to do," Dixon said. "His wife is lost. She's lost. Even though they were separated, they've been together since she was 19. He was a piece of her, something you'll never take away."

Wilson County Sheriff's officials said foul play is suspected in the case. They did not confirm the actual cause of death or specifically where Damon was last seen in Lebanon.

"I just want answers to why," Dixon said. "Why would somebody take such a kind soul from people who needed him? If you know anything, please, please help us. Call. Remain anonymous. Just please help this family get closure."

Dixon said many other close friends will be going to the funeral in Damon's hometown of Paragould, AR.
