TN rehab center offers hope, jobs to disabled

Posted: Updated:

Sixty people with disabilities are on a path to getting hired in the working world.

That special training and a chance for experience happens every day at the Tennessee Rehabilitation Center.

Lewis Pierce was born with autism, and not much is easy for him every day.

He’s now serving food at Tennessee Rehabilitation Center. The money he makes also helps his wheelchair-bound mother.

“She requires a lot of help getting from one place to another. The money I make here helps keep family fed and ready for any kind of thing we need,” Pierce said.

The Tennessee Rehabilitation Center teaches real-world skills to the disabled to help make them employable.

Cerebral palsy and life in a wheelchair have defined Portia Streator since birth, and she won’t put up with it anymore.

“I don’t want disabilities to define what I can do in my life. I want to define what my disability can allow me to do,” Streator said.

She’s training at Tennessee Rehabilitation Center and learning to work.

Streator didn’t have to come to the center, she chose to.

“I don’t want life to pass me by. I’m having too much fun,” she said.

The Tennessee Rehabilitation Center in Smyrna has 60 students taking part in training programs. All of them live at the center at no cost.
