Posted: Updated:

A veteran was cited after firing several shots outside of the Nashville Veteran Affairs Medical Center Saturday night.

According to Metro police, the man fired a dozen shots in the air before putting his gun down and walking inside the hospital. He then told the staff he was suicidal.

Vanderbilt University sent an alert at 10:46 p.m., urging everyone to seek shelter immediately because of a reported shooting.

About 20 minutes later, they sent another alert stating that the suspect was in custody and officers had secured the area.

The alert went on to say that there was no threat to the Vanderbilt campus, however, the area should be avoided.

No one was injured in the incident, and the man who fired the shots has been cited for altering the serial number on his firearm.

He is now receiving treatment at the VA hospital.
