NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A discussion hearing is scheduled for Thursday morning for the man charged in the brutal murder of a Goodlettsville girl.

Roy Coons Jr. pleaded not guilty the first time he appeared in court on Oct. 4.

Coons is accused of brutally killing his 12-year-old neighbor, Yhoana Arteaga.

Her body was found in her bedroom at her family's home on Dickerson Pike in August. Police say the girl was beaten, strangled and partially undressed.

She had texted her mother an hour before she was found, saying someone was at the door.

Coons lived two doors down from the girl and her family. He has been convicted of more than 30 offenses since 1992.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Coons is not expected to appear in court.
