CARTHAGE, TN (WSMV) -

Dolores Bowman’s mother died 12 years ago, and it changed her life. It also changed her career path.

Taking care of her mother in those final days made Bowman determined to become a nurse.

“I’m doing what is meant for me to do,” Bowman said.

Bowman’s recent life events are whispered with pride on the streets of Carthage, 60 miles northeast of Nashville. She’s a few years removed from her restaurant life.

“I can cook lots of pizza and I still grill a mean steak,” she said.

She did that for 20 years, but when her mother was diagnosed with life-ending cancer, Bowman cared for her until the end. Then she felt a new career calling.

“So I pursued that calling,” Bowman said.

She worked to become a nurse technician, then spent four years in school to become a registered nurse. She then went for her Master’s, knowing she could teach.

“I want to be a nurse educator. I want to educate nurses coming up,” Bowman said.

Bowman was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, and it motivated her more.

“It was amazing. I had the most caring nurses. The oncology nurses were simply amazing,” she said.

Now cancer-free and nursing full time, she will receive her doctorate diploma in Las Vegas on Sunday.

“Never give up. Never give up on your dreams. And when you hit those hot spots in the road, keep on pushing,” Bowman said.

Bowman deserves some of the credit for her desire to achieve. For her health, she gives credit to the medical staff at River View Regional, prayers and her strong faith in God.
