NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Police say a convicted felon was the target in a murder along Interstate 24 in south Nashville early Wednesday morning.

Hassan Al Mutory, 22, and an 18-year-old woman had reportedly just left the Deja Vu strip club in downtown Nashville and were driving on I-24 East when someone opened fire from another vehicle.

Al Mutory's Ford Edge crashed into a concrete barrier on the exit ramp to Briley Parkway around 3:30 a.m.

When police responded to the crash, they discovered the vehicle had bullet holes on the outside. When they checked the car, they found Al Mutory and the woman inside the vehicle.

Al Mutory was shot in the head. He was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The 18-year-old female victim was shot in the arm but is expected to recover from her injuries. Police spoke to the woman for her account of the shooting but said her information didn't line up with reports from other witnesses.

Debris from the crash scattered across two lanes of traffic, forcing police to close them for several hours as part of their investigation.

Investigators are looking into Al Mutory's background as they search for the gunman.

According to police, Al Mutory had previous convictions for reckless homicide, unlawful gun possession and drug possession. He had just received a nine-year sentence in May for charges stemming from a 2016 arrest.

Al Mutory was accused of shooting and killing 20-year-old Carlos Gomez in a front yard on Summit Oaks Drive in August 2015. Al Mutory was convicted of reckless homicide in 2016 and was out on time served.

Al Mutory also received a nine year probation sentence this year for unlawful gun possession and possession of Xanax pills for resale.

Police do not currently have a description of any suspects in Al Mutory’s murder.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward. Tipsters can also send information by texting the word “CASH” with the message to 274637 or online at www.nashvillecrimestoppers.com.
