NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A tractor-trailer hauling cows overturned on Briley Parkway North between I-40 and Elm Hill Pike.

The truck overturned just after 1 p.m. Friday. Northbound lanes of Briley Parkway were closed and traffic was diverted for several hours. The roadway reopened just after 9 p.m.

Cows escaped from the truck and were roaming Briley Parkway. About 15 cows were eventually rounded up at two spots.

Police said the weight of the vehicle shifted with the cows inside, causing it to flip. Police said speed was also a factor in the crash. The driver of the vehicle is doing fine.

In addition to the cows on the road, several others were still inside the overturned trailer. Three cows died.

Police said the truck was with Bassett Trucking out of Nebraska.

“Metro animal control is here, as well as the state. I was advised a few moments ago the state has a veterinarian en route to the scene as well and assist the cattle in what needs to be done as this progresses,” said Officer Greg Curtis with Metro police. "The cows got spooked with the sirens on the radio, so we put out 'no sirens' to try to not excite the cattle, so they wouldn't run down I-40 and create more havoc.
