A new bridge in town will fill the gap between the Gulch and the South Broadway area.

People who live and work in the area say they've been waiting on this for years.

The Division Street Extension Bridge runs from 2nd Avenue South to 8th Avenue South and connects a number of key points to the city, including Music Row, Vanderbilt, Midtown and the Gulch.

The bridge will be fully completed by mid-November. At that time, it will have a pedestrian plaza, wide sidewalks and a buffered cycle track.

News 4 talked to a man who said he wanted this nearly a decade ago. He wanted to be the first to walk across the bridge when it opened Monday.

"I thought they were going to have a ribbon-cutting today, so I came up to the be the first person to walk across the bridge after it opened," said Shelby Smith. "We own some property between here and the convention center, and so having access is really an important thing, and it's something that the neighborhood identified probably 10 or 15 years ago to have a better connection."

The bridge opened to traffic Monday morning. News 4 has reached out to Metro Public Works to see how quickly this update will show up on GPS apps.

"This bridge provides a vital link from the Gulch to SoBro, while also connecting to a number of other key points in the city," said Metro Public Works Director Mark Sturtevant in a news release. "This is why we need to continue to invest in our infrastructure and build more complete streets that accommodate and improve vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle access."
