NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Many remember 31-year-old Jonathan Frith as a hero.

In 2015, the Metro Nashville Police Department awarded him "officer of the year" for his bravery during the Antioch movie theater attack.

"Whenever I had a free moment to clear my mind I'd find myself slipping back into that theater and replaying the events and just thinking, 'I shouldn't be here. My kids shouldn't have a father,'" said Frith, reflecting on that day.

Frith is now in trouble with the law, facing charges in Smyrna for resisting a police stop and evading arrest after a dispute with some neighbors. And that’s not all.

News 4 has also learned, at the time of his arrest, Frith had already been decommissioned by Metro police.

Two of his fellow officers said during an arrest Frith kicked the suspect to the ground, even though the suspect was complying.

They said Frith pushed the suspect's face into the mulch then used his hand to push mulch into the suspect's mouth and nose.

New 4 looked at Frith's personnel file and found more.

Frith was suspended on three separate occasions for being rude or disrespectful.

He received an eight-day suspension for getting into a physical fight with a fellow officer, and another two days for using force and alleged profanity during an arrest.

New 4 spoke to Frith by phone Thursday afternoon. He didn't want to do an on-camera interview but said, "I have nothing but good things to say about the Metro Nashville Police Department and I'm happy to have been able to serve the community for the time that I did."

Frith, who had been with the department for eight years, resigned Tuesday.
