Nashville Mayor Megan Barry will unveil the city’s long-awaited mass transit plan next week.

News 4 obtained a copy of invitations sent out to supporters saying the launch of the “Let’s Move Nashville” transit plan will be held next Tuesday at the Music City Center.

The mayor’s announcement will include details on a public referendum that would raise taxes to help fund the massive project.

Metro Council will have to approve the tax referendum soon in order to get it on the May 1 ballot.

“The key piece for Nashville is going to be stepping forward and voting for transit in May,” Barry said. “And that’s where, by the time we’ll have the referendum, we’ll have the comprehensive plan – what you’re going to get and how you’re going to pay for it.”

Barry has discussed preliminary plans that include a light rail on some of Nashville’s major corridors, starting with Gallatin Pike in East Nashville. She has also mentioned the option of building that system underground and said major improvements to the city’s bus service will be part of the plan.
