Anchorage, AK -- Authorities are searching for a bear that attacked and killed a teenager during an annual trail race near Anchorage. Alaska.

Authorities were tipped off that something was wrong when the teen texted his mother that he was being chased by a bear.

The attack happened on Sunday during an annual three-mile run that weaves its way up and then back down a heavily wooded mountain.

Officials say the 16-year-old boy, whose name was not released, was on his way back down the trail when he became separated from the other runners.

The 250-pound black bear was shot in the face by park rangers, but it managed to run away.

Race participants reported seeing several bears along the trail during the race.
