Nashville Mayor Megan Barry is issuing a response to recent immigration enforcement efforts in the city.

In a letter to the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Barry is drawing attention to a video of Kurdish immigrants being stopped and questioned for what she calls "no apparent reason."

In the video, one of the officers is wearing a vest with the word "police" on it, though he was apparently nto affiliated with the Metro Nashville Police Department.

The mayor says the Metro police force has gone to great lengths to build relationships with local immigrants and she does not want those efforts to be undermined when ICE agents do not identify themselves as federal agents.

"We would ask that any ICE agents operating within Davidson County do so in a way that does not impede the job of local law enforcement to keep all Nashvillians safe," Barry said.

According to Barry, federal agents in Nashville are part of an increased effort to enforce deportation orders for people previously convicted of crimes.

Barry is calling for ICE to release the names of those who have been detained to help the community understand the crimes the individuals were convicted of.

"According to your website, 'ICE is committed to maintaining a collaborative and transparent dialogue with the public over the agency's mission and core values.' To make good on this commitment, I would implore you to work more closely with our immigrant and refugee community and local stakeholders to ensure that the broader community is not negatively impacted by what is purported to be targeted enforcement against those who have committed serious crimes in the United States," said Barry in the letter.
