NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A federal judge has said no to Joe Russell's request to pay a smaller amount towards his defense attorney's bills.

Russell was the finance deputy under former Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold.

Arnold is serving prison time as a result of a Channel 4 I-Team investigation.

Russell pleaded guilty in January to his part in an e-cigarette scheme at the jail.

The judge ruled he had to pay $1,000 a month towards the cost of his defense.

Russell asked to lower the amount, saying he's only working part time, but on Monday, Judge Marvin Aspen denied his motion because Russell has property he could sell.
