WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WSMV) -

The heat and humidity is already being blamed for one death so far.

A child died after being left in a van for more than eight hours in West Memphis, AR, on Monday.

According to authorities, the child was picked up around 6:30 a.m. to to go a medical clinic. Someone signed the child in around 7:15, but the boy never got off the van.

Police said there were two adults on the van with the child, but somehow he was missed, and he was not found until the afternoon.

It's a terrible reminder to not leave children or pets inside a car, even if it's only for a few minutes.

Temperatures reached 80 degrees in West Memphis that day. Investigators say temperatures got up to 140 degrees inside the van.

Even at 70 degrees, a locked car can reach 100 degrees in just 20 minutes.
