NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Former state Rep. Jeremy Durham has been hit with the largest fine ever imposed by state campaign finance officials.

The Registry of Election Finance began investigating Durham a year ago this week. Wednesday, they imposed a fine of $465,000.

The registry looked into Durham’s campaign finance reports dating back several years.

An audit questioned discrepancies over how much money Durham was disclosing and whether the former lawmaker used campaign finance funds for personal items.

Some of the expenses included sunglasses, spa products, and Durham’s own birthday celebration at JJ’s Wine Bar in Franklin.

Last September, Durham was expelled from the House of Representatives after an attorney general’s report accused him of sexually harassing 22 women at the legislature.

Durham was not present on Wednesday, but his attorney Peter Strianse said they fully intend to fight this penalty.

Strianse said he questions the motivations behind this decision.
