NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

School may be out for the summer, but what’s going to happen when students return to Bellevue Middle School later this year?

The Channel 4 I-Team has reported on vents caked with what the Metro Public Health Department called possible mold inside Bellevue Middle.

Teachers and students say they’ve seen it. The I-Team wanted to make sure the chair of the school board saw it too.

“Do you mind if I show you some pictures?” the I-Team asked.

“You can but it wouldn't make any of my answers any different,” said Metro School Board Chair Anna Shepherd.

“They've cleaned this area all around it but not treated the real problem which is inside the returns,” said a Metro Schools teacher who sent the I-Team pictures and videos from inside the school.

Despite a teacher documenting it on video and despite one parent pulling their child out of the school, Shepherd said it's not a problem anymore.

"We admitted we probably needed to have some cleaning done, and they were cleaned and they were painted so everything continues to be good,” Shepherd said.

Even after the I-Team exposed the problem and the vents were cleaned, the same teacher said he still saw mold.

“Since I reported this they've come in and cleaned the grills around the vents, but as you can see the vents are clearly black with soot and what appears to be mold,” said the teacher who we’re not identifying because he’s a former employee.

The teacher resigned at the end of May because he said the conditions inside the school were making him so sick he was experiencing health problems.

"I wasn't aware of that. I was assured by central office staff that that everything had been taken care of,” Shepherd said.

When the I-Team sat down to interview Shepherd, a district employee showed up with a timer making it clear we only had 10 minutes to ask questions.

“You want to make sure that your children are safe and have a healthy environment,” said Shepherd.

The employee made it clear when it interview was over, but the I-Team asked one more question.

"What do you say to parents who were really concerned and upset when they saw our story?” the I-Team asked.

“Like I said, I would be upset as well too, so that's why I would want to make sure with the central office staff that we are doing everything we need to be doing to make sure they have a healthy environment,” Shepherd said.

Shepherd said Bellevue Middle School is scheduled to get a deep clean this summer. She also said she and other board members will be going to the school prior to August to check the vents.

The I-Team will be checking back in to make sure that happens.
