Elephant Winkie dies at Hohenwald sanctuary

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Winkie, a longtime and once controversial resident at the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald has died at the age of 51.

Winkie was an Asian elephant who first came to Hohenwald in 2000. She had spent more than 30 years at a zoo in Wisconsin.

In 2006, officials say she was involved in an incident at the sanctuary where a caregiver was killed. That spawned a new approach to how they handle elephants.

Over the last year, Winkie began to suffer from numerous diseases common to aging captive elephants.
