NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Police say a toddler accidentally shot himself inside an apartment at the James A. Cayce Homes in East Nashville overnight.

The child's father, 31-year-old Tommy Washington, told police he was giving two of his four children a bath around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Washington told police he then put his 18-month-old son down on the bed after giving him a bath and walked away.

He told police he heard a gunshot after leaving the room. He said the child somehow got a hold of the handgun, and it went off, grazing the child in the face.

The man was trying to drive the baby to Skyline Medical Center when he got a flat tire and pulled into a Krystal's parking lot about three miles away from his apartment. He called 911 from there, and an ambulance took the baby to the hospital.

At last check, the toddler has serious injuries but is expected to recover.

Washington has now been charged with aggravated child neglect, according to Metro police.

Police waited outside the family's apartment for several hours Wednesday morning to get a search warrant to go inside.

Kierra Hayes, who lives a couple doors down from the family, said she's confident her neighbor would never intentionally hurt his kids.

"We all know that accidents happen, and for the sake of accidents happening, I hope that they look into the father, know that he's a good man and he didn't intentionally harm his kids," Hayes said.

"To hear something like that about my neighbor is just almost unbelievable. It's just like how could this happen because he's a good father. He's always around his kids," she added.

Two pistols were seized from Washington's home. Police believe the child shot himself with a .380 pistol.
