SHELBYVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Bedford County deputy has been arrested on theft charges after an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, according to a news release.

The Bedford County Grand Jury returned indictments against Garcia Romero Jordan for theft over $60,000 and official misconduct.

The TBI said agents discovered that, beginning in October 2015, Jordan began withdrawing money from various ATMs in Bedford and Rutherford counties from the account of an elderly Shelbyville woman he befriended.

During the investigation, agents also discovered Jordan had concealed a civil warrant placed upon a contractor to whom he owed money for work the contractor performed at his home.

Jordan was arrested and released on a $25,000 bond.

Bedford County Sheriff Austin Swing posted a press release on the agency’s Facebook page after the arrest was announced.

“As the investigation developed, we have felt saddened and betrayed that one of our deputies could be alleged to have violated the Sheriff’s Office trust and the public’s trust,” Swing wrote in the letter. “This process has been a trying time for our Sheriff’s Office but if Garcia Johnson did what he has been alleged to have done, then the nature of our relationship becomes an adversarial one rather than that of a protecting and serving one.  Furthermore I ask the community to not let the potential actions of one deputy, destroy or tarnish the great relationship and trust that we have worked so hard to gain within this great community.”
