MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

It may not be football season, but a group of investors were hoping it soon would be with a new league.

But now a Murfreesboro couple who is behind the league has been arrested for allegedly scamming people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The North American Football League appeared legitimate, but after years of promise, many had grown weary that the games would never begin.

The inaugural season was supposed to kick off in the spring of 2016 with eight teams and plans to expand to 16, the Memphis Kings being one of them.

For the past 15 months, an investigation was underway in Florida ending with the chairman, Christopher White, and his wife Tracy, arrested for theft.

A victim initially filed a complaint last year that said Christopher White solicited her to invest in his business, NAFL, and a production company he told her would rival ESPN.

The victim said he claimed to have $400 million in escrow to finance the league.

This particular victim told investigators she gave Christopher White $150,000, and within a year of that, she said he told her they folded.

That is when police said the Whites decided to move from Florida to Murfreesboro.

During the investigation, detectives discovered several more victims.

While police say many were scammed, it is not clear if every aspect of the league was fake, but not one game was played.

In addition to grand theft, the couple was also arrested for fugitive from justice charges.

The Whites are being held without bond in Rutherford County.
