NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A jury has been seated in the first-degree murder trial of Caleb Cannon.

Jury selection began Monday morning in the trial. Cannon is accused of murdering pinup model Nikki Burgess, the mother of his child.

After a short break, opening statements began on Monday afternoon.

Prosecutors maintain Burgess and Cannon had an estranged relationship.

Cannon was allowed to see their child every other weekend, but the state said “he had enough” and “he wanted to remove her from the equation.”

The state said a witness will tell the jury about two suspicious people carrying out what appeared to be dead weight in a large duffel bag.

Cannon’s defense attorney said there is no body, no cause of death and no manner of death. He added Metro police had tunnel vision while handling this case.

Two witnesses were called to the stand on Monday. The first was Stephanie Blaney, a close friend of the victim. The second was Jason Henry, Burgess’ boyfriend at the time she disappeared.

Both said they repeatedly tried to get in touch with Burgess the day of her disappearance and the following days.

“The couple of times I’d call, it was like the phone was shut off,” Henry said.

The witnesses were shown pictures from inside Burgess’ house, which included a bottle of bleach. Blaney said that was unusual.

“She was allergic to bleach,” Blaney said of Burgess.

Before jury selection began, Criminal Court Judge Cheryl Blackburn ruled the testimony of juveniles during the course of trial could not be recorded, either video or audio, by media outlets.

Burgess disappeared in May 2014. Her body has not been found. She was last seen three years ago after dropping their son off at school.

Court will resume Tuesday at 9 a.m.
