TAMPA, FL (WSMV) -

There are people who just have a gift and go out of their way to make a difference, including a woman who is an inspiration and a cancer survivor herself.

Betty Harmon's colleagues call her "the patient whisperer."

For 46 years, Harmon has worked at the cancer floor at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, FL.

She is almost 80 years old but caring for others keeps her going strong.

Because Harmon survived cancer herself, she has a special connection with patients and is able to spread hope by sharing her own story.

Harmon is so good at this that managers have new hires shadow her as part of their training.

If you're looking for opportunities to volunteer, the Ingram Center at Vanderbilt accepts volunteers. Click here for more information.

The American Cancer Society also needs volunteers. Click here for more information.
