NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A serial burglary suspect is in custody after police say they found him asleep in a stolen vehicle in East Nashville on Thursday.

Police said Robert Dowell, 29, admitted that he had driven a van onto the lot of BBB Auto Sales on Nolensville Pike early Thursday morning. Police said he broke into the business and took keys to multiple vehicles.

Police said Dowell then set fire to the van and left in a stolen Nissan Altima. Officers found him sleeping in the car around 10:30 a.m.

Dowell is accused in several business break-ins over the last two months. He is charged with eight counts of burglary, one attempted burglary, two thefts and six counts of vandalism. He is being held on a $152,000 bond.

At the time of his arrest, Dowell was free on $40,000 bond for his arrest last September on aggravated burglary and theft charges in Goodlettsville.

Police say this investigation is ongoing.
