An Antioch High School teacher was arrested Tuesday morning on sexual battery charges after being indicted by the Davidson County Grand Jury.

Police said Jerome Dooley, 40, was arrested at his La Vergne home after a grand jury indictment charging him with sexual battery by an authority figure against a 17-year-old female student.

Police said the investigation began in September 2016 after the victim disclosed to an assistant principal that she was touched inappropriately.

The school system said Dooley was placed on administrative leave with pay after being accused of touching a student on the buttocks and grabbing his crotch in front of the student, according to a statement from Metro Nashville Public Schools.

2007 Antioch High grad Samantha Justice says says she had Dooley for at least three classes.

"He took his job seriously. He was a great role model and a great coach," said Justice.

She says seeing his mugshot was tough.

"It broke my heart. It really did. It was such a surprise and I could see the sadness in his eyes," said Justice.

Justice says Dooley is a devoted husband and father.

"It will never be the same for him. His career will never be the same," said Justice.

Justice is confident the charge will be dropped.

School officials said Dooley, who was a science teacher at Antioch High, has not been allowed on school grounds since he was placed on administrative leave.

In November 2016, school officials said Dooley was suspended without pay pending the investigation by police.

Dooley is free on a $50,000 bond. A court date has not been set.

Investigators are urging others who believe Dooley acted inappropriately toward them is urged to contact the sex crimes unit at 615-862-7540.
