NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The ousting of FBI Director James Comey is being called overdue by some and obstruction of justice by others.

Lawmakers from Tennessee reacted to the unexpected news on Tuesday.

“The FBI is the gold standard of investigations, and to decapitate the head of the FBI, that is a message in intimidation for average FBI employees. We cannot have that in this country,” Rep. Jim Cooper, D-TN, told Channel 4.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-TN, issued the following statement:

While the case for removal of Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey laid out by Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein was thorough, his removal at this particular time will raise questions. It is essential that ongoing investigations are fulsome and free of political interference until their completion, and it is imperative that President Trump nominate a well-respected and qualified individual to lead the bureau at this critical time.

Channel 4 political analyst Kent Syler said he expects to hear more of that type of talk.

“Although justification for Director Comey’s firing can be debated, the fact the FBI is actively investigating the Trump campaign for collusion with the Russians raises concerns,” Syler said. “Look for Nixon comparisons from Democrats and more calls for a special prosecutor.”
