COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -

The Maury County community said goodbye to a sheriff’s deputy who died after a serious crash last week.

A celebration of life ceremony was held Tuesday for Deputy Jimmy Tennyson. Hundreds of people then lined the street in Columbia for a procession.

Friends and family described Tennyson as a kind-hearted man who lived by the words “to protect and serve.”

Tennyson crashed his car in an embankment last Friday. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol crash report, he wasn’t wearing his seat belt. He later died.

Tennyson was on his way to work as a school resource officer.

Those who knew Tennyson remembered his decades of service to the community.

“Jimmy was one of the best. We’ve known him for years. He was super, not as an officer but as a friend,” said Tommy Kelley, a friend of the deputy.
