COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -

Maury County residents and law enforcement throughout the Midstate came together Monday night to pay tribute to fallen Maury County Deputy Captain Jimmy Tennyson.

Tennyson was involved in a crash Friday morning on Iron Bridge Road in Columbia. Tennyson attempted to over-correct on a curve when the deputy's car careened down a steep embankment. He later died in the hospital.

Tennyson spent 27 years at the Maury County Sheriff’s Department. His death is a big loss not only for his fellow officers, but for the people he served in the county.

The love and respect for Tennyson was on display outside Heritage Funeral Home for mourners to see. Two patrol cars with lights flashing, department motorcycles and Tennyson's patrol car.

"Everything you see here, the lights, the sirens, that's Jimmy's car there, all here to honor him and to show our respect, to give him the honor he deserves." said Chief Deputy Ray Jeter.

Tennyson was on his way to work as a school resource officer when the crash happened early Friday morning. It has been an emotional three days for the department.

"It's a struggle this weekend, has been a struggle today, it will be a struggle tomorrow when Jimmy is buried. We loved and respected Jimmy," Jeter said.

Tennyson's death has hit the students at McDowell Elementary School hard. Tennyson was the school's resource officer and was an important part of their lives.

"They've lost a hero, someone they looked up to, someone they respected, someone they could lean on when they needed counsel. These young folks at the school, they are hurting too," Jeter said.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at South Gate Church of Christ in Columbia.
