New BCycle stations open in Clarksville

Posted: Updated:

Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan cut a ribbon to unveil two new bike share stations today. The ceremony took place at the Pollard Road trail head on the Clarksville Greenway and included Clarksville Academy students, Community Health Foundation Board Members, and Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department leaders. “We want to offer healthy opportunities to help our citizens live the best life possible,” said Mayor McMillan.

Another station opened at Public Square and Franklin Street in Downtown Clarksville today, which now makes a total of four BCycle stations in operation.

Riders indicated a preference for adding a BCycle on the Clarksville Greenway and in Downtown Clarksville in a survey. The new stations added today are similar to the ones that opened January 2016 at Liberty Park and Cumberland Riverwalk.

The director of Clarksville Parks and Recreation, Jennifer Letourneau, said she expects the two new stations to expand the early success of the BCycle program. “The goal of this grant was to get Clarksvillians active,” said Letourneau. “I can say without a doubt that it has succeeded. Since February, BCycle has had over 3,000 users, who have taken over 7,000 trips, covering 48,000 miles. And these riders burned almost 2 million calories. With these additional stations, those numbers should skyrocket.”

The bike-share program was created due to grant proposals written by students in the Clarksville Academy’s Challenge Based Learning Program. The Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation, which was created in 2006 to promote health initiatives, approved the requests.

The Clarksville BCycle system allows riders to check out BCycles from kiosks or through a cell phone app. The program offers several membership options and entitles the rider to unlimited 60 minute bike trips. Trips lasting more than an hour are subject to usage fees.
