NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A memorial service was held Monday for John Stevens, the west Nashville gas station clerk who was shot and killed last week.

Stevens, 58, was killed in an armed robbery and attempted carjacking last Tuesday night.

Stevens worked at the Exxon station on Charlotte Pike for the past eight years. Some of his former customers attended the ceremony to pay their respects to Stevens' wife, Peggy.

“It’s affected everybody in this little community,” said Antoinette, one of Stevens’ longtime customers. “I just wanted to pay respects to the family and let John’s wife know what a great man we all thought he was.”

The funeral took place at West Harpeth Funeral Home, just across the street from the Exxon station where Stevens was killed.

“You go to work and you look across the street at the funeral home, and who would have thought? Not even a week later, you’re over there,” said April Helm, who placed flags in Stevens’ memory.

Stevens will be buried at the Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery at a later date. He was a Navy veteran and served on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in the 1980s.
